CEPC Klystron Efficiency Reaches International Leading Level (2024-02-06)

On February 2, the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) project team organized a test meeting for the CEPC 650 MHz/800 kW high-efficiency klystron in Beijing. Experts from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Southeast University, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of CAS, Tsinghua University, China Institute of Atomic Energy, and the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of CAS attended the meeting. The expert panel concluded that the CEPC 650 MHz/800 kW high-efficiency klystron met the design requirements in terms of output power and saturation efficiency under pulse mode.

The CEPC 650 MHz/800 kW high-efficiency klystron was developed by the team led by Zhou Zusheng and Xiao Ouzheng. After more than three years of technical accumulation and overcoming numerous technical challenges, the team achieved complete independent intellectual property rights. Operating at 650 MHz, the klystron achieved an output power of 849 kW and a saturation efficiency of 77.2%, placing it at a world-leading level among high-power klystrons of this type, with the highest reported efficiency based on literature.

This project received support from the Wang Yifang Scientist Studio and IHEP's Knowledge Innovation Program.
