The 9th Annual Meeting of the International Advisory Committee for the Circular Electron Positron Collider Held (2023-11-15)

From October 30 to 31, the 9th annual meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) for the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Participants included IHEP Director and CEPC Executive Committee Chair Academician Wang Yifang, executive committee members, project leaders, related system heads, and research staff.

The meeting was chaired by IAC Chair Professor Brian Foster from Oxford University, who is also responsible for the management scheme design of the International Linear Collider (ILC). CEPC Project Manager Researcher Lou Xinchou first provided an overview of the project's overall progress, responded to recommendations from the previous year's advisory committee, and introduced the status of the Technical Design Report (TDR) for the accelerator and the international cost review. CEPC Detector Coordinators, IHEP Researchers Joao Guimaraes da Costa and Wang Jianchun, presented the CEPC detector design, preliminary research, plans, and international cooperation in detector development. IHEP Deputy Director and CEPC Accelerator Coordinator Researcher Li Yuhui introduced the content and plans of the CEPC accelerator TDR. The meeting also connected with the respective review committee chairs for the two-stage international review of the accelerator TDR system and cost estimation: Professor Frank Zimmermann, a senior scientist from CERN's Accelerator Department and one of the leaders of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), and Professor Leonid RIVKIN, a senior scientist from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and Deputy Director of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), to hear reports on conclusions and recommendations from the two international review groups. At the meeting, IHEP Researchers Ruan Manqi and Li Weidong, along with CEPC Accelerator Coordinator Researcher Gao Jie, presented updates on the CEPC physics white paper, software computing progress, and the upcoming plans and scope for the CEPC accelerator Engineering Design Report (EDR). During the meeting, IAC members engaged in in-depth dialogue and exchanges with the CEPC project management.

The International Advisory Committee unanimously acknowledged the achievements made by CEPC over the past year, including accelerator technical design, key technology R&D and prototype development, physics research, and detector and software preliminary studies. The committee provided suggestions regarding the detector collaboration group, EDR plans, and international cooperation, strongly supporting CEPC's entry into the EDR phase and emphasizing that EDR design must be integrated with specific site conditions.

Fifteen internationally renowned scientists, technical experts, and management specialists with experience in large-scale scientific projects from Switzerland, the UK, Italy, Australia, Japan, Germany, the USA, France, China, and regions including Hong Kong and Taiwan were invited to participate in the meeting either in person or online.
